Working with IP Licensors: What Toy Factories Need to Get Right
Manufacturing licensed IP products (Disney, Pokemon, Marvel, Sanrio and similar) involves requirements far beyond standard toy production. IP licensors impose strict controls on every aspect of the product to protect their brand value.
Color Matching and Pantone Standards
Every licensed product comes with mandatory Pantone color specifications. The factory must produce color chip samples and get them approved under D65 standard lighting conditions before production begins. Color deviation is measured using Delta-E values, and most licensors require Delta-E below 1.5. Our factory uses precision electronic color powder ratio machines to ensure batch-to-batch consistency.
Mold Line and Surface Quality
IP licensors specify maximum acceptable parting line visibility (typically gap below 0.03mm), flash/burr standards, and surface finish requirements. Sink marks, flow lines and ejector pin marks must fall within defined zones that do not affect the character's appearance. Our molds use hidden sub-gate designs to keep gate marks invisible on the finished product.
Packaging Requirements
Licensed products have strict packaging specifications including approved artwork templates, mandatory legal text (trademark notices, age warnings, country-specific safety marks), barcode placement and even specific Pantone colors for the packaging itself. Our packaging team works directly with IP approval departments to ensure every element meets specifications.
Factory Audit Requirements
Major IP licensors require factory audits before production can begin. Disney requires FAMA (Facility and Merchandise Authorization). Each licensor has their own audit checklist covering worker welfare, safety systems, environmental controls, IP security (no unauthorized photography, restricted access zones, CCTV monitoring) and quality management systems. Our factory maintains audit-ready status at all times with ISO 9001, ICTI and BSCI certifications.
IP Security Measures
We implement strict IP protection protocols including isolated production lines for sensitive products, a no personal camera policy on the factory floor, 24/7 CCTV monitoring, and immediate destruction of all rejected products in our on-site recycling granulator to prevent any possibility of unauthorized products entering the secondary market.
